A huge thank you to MSL @literacywithmsl for leading an amazing session on the Orton-Gillingham (OG) Approach!
This training was a game-changer for the ReadAble team, giving us the tools to teach more effectively while deepening our understanding of how languages are learned.
During the school holidays, ReadAble children took part in the inaugural Love All Tennis Camp. Hosted by a tennis alumni team, our students had a great time as they learnt and practised tennis drills. For some, it was their first exposure to the sport.
We organised our own Year End Party for the first time! There were crafts, painting, a dance party, carnival games, snacks and a full buffet spread from GRAIN, generously sponsored by a ReadAble supporter. We also had a mini Talent Time. It was wonderful for our community of families, volunteers and donors to let loose together in this void deck party!
Some of our friends – a vascular surgeon, arts producer, and a team of communications professionals from TEAM LEWIS – came to share about their work and truly diverse lived experiences which brought them to their current careers. It was wonderful to hear about how sports, travel, F&B jobs, and encouragement from family, school, and co-workers, featured in their career journeys.
In October and November, our children explored digital artmaking and learnt about western classical music with facilitators from CMAS; the sessions felt both therapeutic and intellectually stimulating at once! In November, together with parents and volunteers, ReadAble children also attended a specially-organised backstage tour and scavenger hunt at the Esplanade Recital Studios. This was followed by Chamber Music Arts Singapore’s Concert for Children, which shared with our children the music and stories of Brahms, Robert Schumann and Antonín Dvořák.
Chapter Zero came to offer our volunteers training in respecting children’s autonomy! As proponents of respectful and mindful parenting in Singapore, they have provided us with training back in 2019, and we are glad that our volunteers are equipped with more skills to communicate with children respectfully. We understand how deep the work is and how impactful it can be when children feel truly seen and heard.
We were pleased to invite The Finger Players to our neighbourhood for a multi-modal arts activity, supported by our donor SC Capital Partners. We had a lot of fun making puppets using ping pong balls, and making up stories. Some children got to manipulate a larger puppet that TFP brought along! (P.S. Some children also had macadamia nuts for the first time!)
A group of our children attended The Monster In The Mirror by Bitesize Theatre Productions, live on stage! We had watched a version online during the pandemic, and it was wonderful to see the shift to the live, in-person format, with set design and all.
