SEL LIBRARY

May 2022: ReadAble is grateful to Dr. Gulizar Haciyakupoglu whose generous donation allowed us to set up a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) Library at Catch+. Dr Gulizar's contribution will go a long way towards equipping our students with life skills to step into the future with confidence.

GIC

Mar 2022: GIC stepped up to give ReadAble 500 ART self-test kits after we faced new and stricter testing requirements for our volunteers because of the Omicron surge. We are so grateful to GIC; their generosity has enabled us to run our weekly classes consistently and safely.

Blangah rise primary school

Mar 2022: ReadAble is thankful to Blangah Rise Primary School’s English Language Department for their partnership and for sharing a wonderful collection of big books. Our Explorers and Junior Rangers look forward to reading these books in class!

WILD RICE

Feb-Mar 2022: WILD RICE invited our students and volunteers to watch The Amazing Celestial Race, a madcap musical comedy inspired by the story of the Chinese Zodiac. Our students were thrilled by the production, which was jam-packed with action, puppets, special effects, and music. Many of them asked if they could go back for a second time!

The finger players

Jan-Feb 2022: Leading puppetry theatre company The Finger Players invited ReadAble students to watch an online performance of The World of Our Own, an empowering and relevant show about creating the world we want to live in, in spite of the isolation we face from the Covid-19 pandemic.

 

 

2021

Redemption hill church

Dec 2021: Some friends of RHC donated colourful Koodoughs Clay sets to each of our Explorers for Christmas. With their new air-dry clay kits, our students will be able to sculpt and create anything they imagine in class and at home!

GIC

Dec 2021: GIC, through a staff-led ground up project, gave ReadAble 200 ART self-test kits as we gear up to resume face-to-face lessons in 2022. GIC also supplemented our students’ Christmas presents with stationery packs tailored to each age group, so that every child has exactly what they need in the classroom for the new school year.

REAdy-for-school christmas wish list

Dec 2021: Friends of ReadAble including Redemption Hill Church, BooksActually, and many kind individuals fulfilled 101 students’ Christmas wishes to get them ready for the new school year. Our students received new backpacks, school shoes, pencil cases, water bottles, and more. Donors also contributed generously for grocery vouchers to help 37 ReadAble families tide over these difficult times.

WILD RICE & TZION FOUNDATION

Nov-Dec 2021: Our students experienced WILD RICE’s Japanese-inspired pantomime Momotaro and the Magnificent Peach. The colourful and entertaining musical was also a timely reminder that we are all responsible for our environment. Tzion Foundation made it possible for ReadAble’s Champions to attend, while WILD RICE sponsored our Explorers, Rangers, and volunteers!

Darren & Jerryl

10 Dec & 17 Dec 2021: Singapore’s only award-winning magician duo Darren and Jerryl invited ReadAble to participate in their Beyond Virtual (Christmas Edition) workshop and performance. We were all dazzled by their skill and showmanship at this virtual magic experience!

CPA Australia christmas party

4 Dec 2021: This was the fifth year that CPA Australia invited us to their annual Christmas Party. Even though it was held online, there were games, performances, a meet-and-greet with Santa, and — our students’ favourite — a virtual tour of New Zealand. We had so much fun!

LINDA LOCKE

Dec 2021: Author Linda Locke donated two copies of her beautiful books — The Boy Who Talked All Day, Agnes and Her Amazing Orchid, and the Jack is Curious series — to the ReadAble library at Catch+ centre in Jalan Kukoh.

GATEWAY THEATRE

27 Nov - 4 Dec 2021: Gateway Theatre gave ReadAble Rangers the opportunity to attend Behind the Wall, a meaningful show that helped our students understand and appreciate our migrant worker friends. Our students created thank you cards for them after the show.

TAN YI HAN & AURELIE CHARMEAU

Jun 2021: Han and Aurelie co-created an illustrated book “When Can I Stop Wearing a Mask?” to help children make sense of the pandemic and develop compassion for others. ReadAble provided inputs to the book and the creators donated half the sales proceeds to ReadAble.

JULIAN WONG & SINDHURA KALIDAS

Apr-May 2021: Theatre practitioners Julian Wong and Sindhura Kalidas visited our ReadAble Champions class to run drama and music workshops for our teenagers as part of their theatre education module.

TZION FOUNDATION

13-14 Mar 2021: Tzion Foundation made it possible for our students to attend The Feelings Farm produced by Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay, a musical which explores emotions as landscapes and gives children and adults alike the language to process them in a healthy way.

ESPLANADE - THEATRES ON THE BAY

17 Jan 2021: Our students participated in the creation of The Feelings Farm musical, part of Esplanade’s inaugural March On festival for children. They were encouraged to draw, sing, dance, and speak about different feelings and how they experienced them.


 

2020

Cope Disaster Champions

May 2020: Disaster relief non-profit COPE published a booklet aimed at helping young children deal with life in lockdown amidst a pandemic. Endorsed by UNICEF, “Stay Safe and Smiling” features the story of two ReadAble students.

ENGINEERING GOOD

From Apr 2020: Engineering Good shares our belief that no child should be left behind in digital access, and has been providing donated laptops for our students since the pandemic started.

13 Dec 2019: Wild R!ce took the ReadAble kids for a very magical evening at the theatre with their annual Christmas pantomime Peter Pan in Serangoon Gardens.

KPMG Dragonboat Team

7 Dec 2019: The KPMG Dragonboat Team took the ReadAble Champions out on the water for an afternoon of dragon boating where they learnt about the history of the Kallang Basin.

CPA Australia Christmas Party

1 Dec 2019: Our third year getting invited to CPA Australia’s annual Christmas Party for family and friends at Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre - we had a blast as always!

Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) by UOB

16 Nov 2019: Sponsorship of learning journey to Ground-Up Initiative (GUI) by UOB - our kids were taught how rice plant saplings were sown and got to try their hand at it, alongside a nutritious meal made with fresh ingredients from the farm.

11 Nov 2019: The ReadAble Champions started a project called @humansofkukoh, where they interviewed people in their neighbourhood and learnt to champion the stories of others. These stories were published in The Birthday Book 2019 in collaboration with The Birthday Collective. 

Rolypoly Dance Your Way 

12 Oct 2019: The dance company Rolypoly Family performed “Letters Come Alive!” for our Explorers, and “Say That Again” for ReadAble Rangers, showing the relationship between movement and language. Later, all students and their neighbours were invited to join in a void deck Dance Party.

Jun 2019: As part of our journalism module where our ReadAble Champions were taught to tell their own and others’ stories, we invited marketing-maven-cum-singer-songwriter Sharliza Rahman to share her life story to inspire the kids.

Diane Leow & Chan See Ting 

Jun 2019: Journalist Diane Leow and photographer Seets Chan gave a 4-week module on journalism for the ReadAble Champions, coaching the kids on conducting interviews and doing write-ups. The module culminated in a trip to MediaCorp where they got a behind-the-scenes tour of news media and entertainment.
